The first day

Today we enter the world of blogging. This is for Jeannine who always tells me to start doing this, so I am. I will document our daily adventures and the funny things the girls say day to day. This is mainly for me in all honesty. It's hard to sit down and write something in their baby books everyday. So here's to technology and a virtual copy for their future.

This is a beautiful Saturday morning. Steve has to work until noon, so it is just the girls running the house. Right now, Olivia and Sophie are stacking up Poker chips on the hallway bench and Sophie states she is playing "Kepto Finch". I don't know what that means. Do you ever say something that you know you've never said before? Like, my eyebrow is burning or get your leg out of my pants? Something like that? I just said, "Olivia, get the poker chips out of your Cheerios. They aren't clean." To which Sophie said, "Mom. Just leave us alone. We're trying to play something." Sigh. This is a preview to teenagehood isn't it? They are already ganging up on me. Waiting, watching, plotting.

We are moving to a new daycare in a week. We've just had so many issues with the one we are in right now and I think it is best to go. We found a great one in Polk City built on to the Lutheran church here. I think it is going to be a great fit for the girls. It's just hard, as a mom, to not wallow in pure guilt at all times. I try to give myself credit for doing the right thing for our family, but then Olivia says she "simply can't bare to leave her bestest teacher Katie". Yes, her teacher is good, but daily candy and ice cream is not. Nor are Fundips and sundae cones at the pool 3 times a week. It's not just the nutrition stuff. I just think the church is offering a childcare style that is more congruent with how we raise our kids. And, I'm hoping they are going to flourish there like they did at Mercy. Besides, Olivia is going to start Kindergarten soon. Giant sigh. Unbelievable. I swear if anyone makes fun of her.....but then I remember the great stuff. Like, remember going "school shopping"? This was my FAVORITE time of the year. All the latest fashions...well, maybe a new tshirt, and brand new pencils, crayons, a folder with a kitten on it, a TrapperKeeper? The smell of brand new gym shoes solely reserved for gym floor use? A brand new backpack and your very own rug square? Kleenex!! I might be more excited that she is, but I think she'll catch on. Plus, I can pretty much bet that TrapperKeepers aren't around anymore.....But, what if they were??!

Last night I went and got my ears pierced for a second time like a 12 year old. It was great. My friend Amy and I went to the mall to get Steve some clothes with a gift card and there it was in all it's shining glory, "Claire's Boutique". Angels sang. Not really, but Amy made a random comment as we strolled by, "I want to get my ears pierced sometime." I came to a screeching halt. "Why not now?" I said. She said, NO WAY. Amy is terrified of needles. She passes out at the sight of blood. She can't even talk about medical procedures. No one can touch near her neck. She freaked out that the annual blood drive was held in her office building yesterday. Etc. After some major coaxing and telling her what better time than now with an almost nurse to catch her and she finally agreed and there we were, showing our IDs to ensure our proper ages and having a17 year old show us how to clean around our earrings. Amy didn't pass out and I now have two earrings in each ear. Not a big difference, really, just a really funny way to remember being 12.

Well, today is a day for getting organized, cleaning the house, getting the laundry done. This afternoon, I'm sure Steve will have formulated a plan for adventure. Like the time he bought a kite at Walgreens and took us to a remote field where we attempted to put it together, but most of our supplies blew away. It was funny seeing him try to run with it though. Stupid kite. His ideas are priceless and he keeps us adventurous. If it were up to me, I'd be at the mall playground or at the Ankeny poolside. He forces me to consider the outdoors on the daily basis. I reluctantly go and don't tell him but, I kind of enjoy it. Currently, he is trying to teach Rosie Posie Clark how to swim. She barks at the water. We'll see.....

Have a great day everyone!
